To Live a Truer Life
About the Author
Lynn Gordon Hughes has been studying the Hopedale Community and its founder, Rev. Adin Ballou, for over a decade. She is currently a graduate student in the History Department at Brown University, specializing in the social and intellectual history of the pre-Civil War United States. She has edited two books by Adin Ballou, Practical Christianity (2002) and Christian Non-Resistance (2003), and has written articles for the on-line Dictionary of American Biography and Dictionary of Unitarian and Universalist Biography.
In turning her knowledge of the Hopedale Community into a children's book, Lynn was able to draw on over 20 years' experience working with elementary-school children as a Girl Scout leader and religious educator. She was Director of Religious Education at First Universalist Church of Woonsocket, Rhode Island from 1988 to 1996. She credits her students with sharpening her eye for details that will interest children and with teaching her to explain concepts such as Adin Ballou's "non-resistance of evil with evil" in language a child can understand.
Lynn lives in Providence, Rhode Island with her husband, Peter Hughes. They are the parents of two grown children. Lynn is employed as a programmer/analyst for Computing and Information Systems at Brown University. Peter is a retired Unitarian Universalist minister and a historian of Unitarian Universalism. Together Lynn and Peter are working on a new edition of Adin Ballou's autobiography and gathering materials for a biography.
